A requirement for all do-it-yourself homeowners is a wooden tool chest to keep their tools. If you are in need of one, you can always buy one in the store, or you can put your knowledge of woodworking to work and make your own wooden toolbox. This is an easy project to complete, and you can even get your children to help by giving them the opportunity to take pride in something they built with their own hands. A wooden toolbox is the project of a classic handyman, but many plans do not contain a cover. The addition of a lid to a wooden toolbox not only makes for a more pleasing appearance to the eye. But it also protects your tools. When making a cover, use the same type and thickness of the wood as the rest of the toolbox.
Only a few common tools of cutting and installing the lid are needed. Whether you are working on a large or small project, it can be a hassle to constantly have to look around for scattered tools. You can build a wood machinist toolbox that is easy to do, but strong enough to handle any type of work you take on. Cut two pieces 12 inches long for the ends and one piece 18 1/2-inch long from the bottom of a 1-by-10 inch board. Cut two pieces the same size as the bottom with a 1-by-4 inch joint. Measure 2 7/8 inches from the top corners to the inside of the end pieces and mark this point. Mark a second point 4 1/2 inches from the bottom corners. Connect them with a ruler and cut along the lines to make tilted cultures of the end pieces.
Measure the center of each end piece on the top and measure a little less than a quarter of an inch on each side of the center mark. Make a line of each of these points that extends up to 2 inches. Connect them with a straight line at the bottom. Cut the groove you just measured. Cut a handle from a 1-by-2 inch board that measures 20 inches long. Use sandpaper to sand the larger slot until the handle fits tightly. Stick it in place with wood glue and let it dry. Nail the sides in the wooden toolbox, using wood glue if necessary to reinforce them. Nail the lower part after the glue has dried, if the glue has been used. Use small nails to reinforce the handle if necessary.
